Precautions
Always use clean hands and utensils when working with ingredients you are applying to your face.
Wash your hands before and after each application.
Steam should be moderately hot - if it feels as though it is burning your nostrils when you breathe, it is too hot.
Don't rush. This facial is meant to be an experience in self-care and relaxation. Take time to experience the process.
Prepare your face
Wash your face, removing all makeup with soap or facial cleanser.
Fill a wash bowl with hot, steamy water. Add facial herbs. Allow to steep.
Holding your face above the bowl, cover your head and bowl with a towel tent. With elbows on the table and hands holding the towel at your head, this should be the right height to the water. Allow the steam to work for 5 - 10 minutes.
If you feel the steam is too hot, allow the water to cool slightly and try again.
Do not dry your face, allow to air dry.
Or, if you prefer-
Dip a clean soft face cloth in hot water to which you have added the herbs or essential oil.
Squeeze the excess water from the cloth and smooth the cloth over your face (barber shop fashion) from your chin and cheeks to your forehead. (leave the areas around your nose and mouth uncovered, so you can breathe properly. Let the compress work for 5-10 minutes. If the compress begins too get cool, dip into the hot water and reapply the compress.
Exfoliate your face
Using an exfoliant for your face type, gently apply to a moist face, neck and décolletage
in circular motion. Avoid eyes, inside nostrils and mouth.
Rinse well, with plenty of tepid water.
Allow to air dry, or if you prefer gently pat the skin dry with a clean towel or wash cloth.
Skin will be especially receptive to your skin care products following exfoliation.
Massage your face
A gentle massage with a light cream or oil will stimulate circulation and help with skin tone.
Rub the cream or oil between your hands to warm and lubricate.
Apply the cream or oil using gentle, upward strokes, blending outwards from the middle of the face; to neck and décolletage using upward strokes and blending outwards from the center of the décolletage.
Sit, or lie down for a few moments to relax and allow the skin to breath.
Deep clean your face
Prepare and apply a facial mask in generous proportions to the face and neck area.
Avoid the sensitive area around the eyes, inside the nostrils and the center of the lips.
Gently apply an eye cream or oil around the eye area and onto the lips.
Sit, or lie down for 15-20 minutes, relax and allow the mask to detoxify your skin. You may feel some tingling or tightening of your skin.
Remove the mask by rinsing with plenty of tepid water.
Allow to air dry.
Tone your face
Tone your face with either a toner or astringent. Apply by gently moving a clean dampened cotton ball over the facial area. (Avoid the eyes, inside the nostrils and inside mouth)
Moisturize your face
To complete your facial, apply a moisturizer, suitable for your skin type.
Massage into the skin in gentle, light, circular movements.
Finish by gently applying moisturizer over the décolletage, neck and facial area moving
upward and outward from the center.
Relax your face
Take some time to either, sit in your favorite chair and listen to some music, soak in a warm tub, or lie down and daydream.
Relax and allow your skin cells some time to rejuvenate.
